To achieve your goals: stay hungry, stay foolish

When I mention that my 17th book will be released in a couple of months, some people react with surprise. Many dream about writing, let alone publishing, at least one book!

I´m not being coy, just matter-of-fact. First of all, I´m not exactly a teenager, so I´ve had plenty of years during which to write books. I planned to write them, I did, and I have more in the works. Why? Because I´m a writer. I don´t just think about writing. I actually sit down and do it.

Last year I planned to run a half marathon, I signed up, I trained, and made it to the finish line. Why? Because I´m a runner. I don’t say that next Monday, next month, next year, I will run. I lace up my shoes and hit the pavement today.

I´m not telling you this to show off, but to prove a point.

When someone tells me how lucky I am to be a published author or in such good shape for my age, I think of all the hours I put in throughout the years to set and accomplishing those goals. That´s what luck is made of! You invest time, effort, persistence, and thus increase your odds of success.

Thinking or even talking about writing a book, running a marathon, starting a blog or backpacking around Europe will not make it happen. Sure, it´s a precursor, but unless you take action, it will be a mere thought, nothing but a dream.

I´ve had plenty of challenges in life – as most people do – and, going back to writing, as an example, I´ve done it in depressed states and feeling blissful, when life was grand and when it seemed worse than a nightmare, after the death of someone dear and shortly after the birth of each of my children. That´s how books get written. That´s how things get done.

Life will always get in the way of your dreams, if you let it, and the perfect challenge-free time may never arrive, so make plans and take action now.

My message to those who are making New Year’s lists of resolutions and goals, and who risk feeling like a failure when twelve months from now, they realize none of them were met:  don´t set goals of what you want to accomplish.

  • Set the goal of becoming the kind of person that will accomplish objectives, year, in year out.

Do you want to write a book or do you want to become a writer? Do you want to run once or twice or do you want to become a runner for life?

It’s fine either way; there is no right or wrong answer. But if you choose the second option, then ask yourself what traits you need to develop to become a writer, a runner, a blogger, an entrepreneur, a parent, you name it …

Above all you will need to develop persistence, patience and stamina. You will also have to nurture your passion. That´s why Steve Jobs said: “Stay hungry.

Ah yes, and foolish, also foolish …

This is my secret to achieving my goals: I´m hungry and foolish.

I read this in the bathroom of my school and you made me stop & think. I had to let this all marinate in my head and come home, let it marinate some more and then respond. I commend you for all that you have accomplished. You are an inspiration, and un gran ejemplo! I guess basically what it is, as we say in Brooklyn…If you’re gonna talk the talk, walk the walk. I think that is why I never really made resolutions, always too scared of failure…and I don’t like to FAIL!!! I don’t put what my MISSION may be out there….but if I choose to do something I follow through. Truth be told I never really found someone to MOTIVATE me….or me even MOTIVATE myself for that matter. I think sometimes you get into a rut…feeling “this can’t happen…to good to be true” or I just SETTLED, but as Steve Jogs says, “Don’t settle!” and he is right….maybe my views may change this year though…I have a funny feeling about 2012 might be a better year for me, I pray! ….I am hungry this time around….real hungry ;) and foolish too ;)

    Thanks for your motivation! xo

I believe we all have a mission, and when we figure out what it is, then we are basically … happy …. even with life´s ups and downs. Never change!

you are an inspiration Lorraine :)

      Likewise. Heh.

My secret is to not make resolutions, ha!
Seriously, I try to go with the flow because I hate feeling frustrated. I know that if I catch the wave, I am more likely to achieve what I want. That might explain why in most cases I say YES! when the opportunity knocks my door and only NO when I’m starting to feel overwhelmed. Gives me a sense of balance.
But you’re so right, I’m also a doer. My downside is that I lose gas when something equally interesting comes in my way and pulls me in a different direction. Or when my computer crashes and my new book is lost because I didn’t have a backup! Things like that.

    • Lorraine C. Ladish

Well, as you said you are a doer, and that´s what matters. I believe creative people do get pulled mentally in different directions. Just last year I had so many ideas, including to start making and perhaps selling my own jewelry, that if I did them all I would never write. But knowing I´m neurotic helps me tell my mind to STOP and focus on the few things I picked or picked me as life-long passions. I remember once my laptop was stolen from an airplane (two and some years ago) and I had no backup —- It was tough. So, we all go through stuff like that.

  • Eileen

Silvia… I never thought of it that way. I like your point…going with the flow and when the opportunity arises…rising to the occasion. Love that!

    • Lorraine C. Ladish

Some people run with the opportunity and some people run away from it ….

        Agree!

Fear keeps people stuck! Uncertainty too… But that’s life…

    • Lorraine C. Ladish

Of course. But until we conquer a fear, we need to fake it till we make it, right?

  • Paloma Corredor

Well, I make resolutions but I finally have learned how to distinguish the real purposes of the things that are vague dreams or escapes from reality. So I just work on my resolutions, step by step, day by day, although I´m not as disciplined as I would like. But I know time passes very quickly and I don´t want to regret for wasting my life. That´s my biggest motivation!

    Felicidades for the new book!!

    • Lorraine C. Ladish

Thank you. The book is Diario del Exito, based on the blog! We all have to battle distractions, but we must not lose sight of our priorities! Besos, Paloma.
