Hispanic students lead the nation with high scores in Advance Placement exams, reports CBS Miami.

As Florida’s education rankings dropped from fifth to 11th place, Hispanic students in Miami-Dade County are making strides.

Hispanic students in Miami-Dade County ranked first in three categories. According to CBS: The number of Hispanic AP exam scores of three or above, the number of individual Hispanic students scoring three or above, as well as the total number of AP exams taken by Hispanic students.

The rankings are based on the College Board.

“These findings demonstrate that our students are responding positively to a rigorous curriculum and technology-based education that has enhanced their learning experience,” Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho, told CBS Miami.

While advance placement students are doing well, the state is struggling to make the grade. The state received an overall grade of C-plus, down from last year’s B-minus, reports the Associated Press. The state’s drop is a combination of weaker student performance and last year’s $1.35 billion budget cut.

That’s set to change this year as the state prepares to pump $1 billion into the education budget, reports the Associated Press.
