Penelope Cruz’s directorial debut has turned sour.
A few weeks ago, the actress made a super sexy ad for the lingerie company Agent Provocateur, starring model Irina Shayk, Spanish sex symbol Miguel Angel Silvestre and Penelope’s sister Monica Cruz.
But the commercial, that showed dozens of stunning models in lingerie to the delight of Silvestre, was censored on YouTube and Cruz has now publicly expressed her disgust with the decision. The project was very special to her not only for it being her first experience as a director but because her family and loved ones were involved in it as well.
Penelope’s brother Eduardo composed the music and her husband Javier Bardem and best friend actress Goya Toledo were also part of the ensemble. Plus, Penelope and Monica designed the lingerie collection (named L’Agent) for the firm.
Now, the Spanish actress regrets that many people have been unable to enjoy her six minute video, because of censorship.
Penelope Cruz: “Apparently I’m a pervert”
“Apparently I’m a pervert,” Cruz told the Australian newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald.
She admits that she was very upset because YouTube and some TV channels have censored the video, even without having bothered to see it in its entirely. She complains that the ad, which she intended to make erotic and smart, was described as pornographic and too sexy for viewers.
“It was censored because people said it was too sexy or too pornographic for YouTube and then two days later they put it back on.”
But it didn’t make things better.
“Then some people were still saying that it was too sexy to be there so you have to put your information about who you are, your email and say that you are older than 18 because apparently you can watch all those violent videos and horrible things that leave you traumatized forever but you can’t watch this,” Cruz quipped.
In August, Cruz told Vogue magazine that her first work as a director was “very personal and important for me, a very interesting experience. They gave me all the freedom and I was able to tell the story I wanted to tell. I used women of all shapes and sizes, as it was important for me to let women know that this brand is for everyone.”
The company’s creative director, Sarah Shotton, highlighted how involved Cruz was in the shooting, to the point that she considered this video “her child.”
“Penelope said that she wanted to be fully engaged in the creative process of the ad, and took it upon herself to take care of even the smallest details in the production,” Shotton told Vogue.
Motherhood and Hollywood
However, criticisms and obstacles have not deterred the actress’ perseverance. Penelope Cruz has spent many years working hard to become the first Spanish actress to win an Oscar. Actually, Elle magazine listed her among this
year’s “Women in Hollywood .”
Now that she is a mother, she prefers working less as an actress and wants to engage in other creative projects that inspire her while occupying slightly less of her time.
Now, she only shoots one film a year, so she can spend as much time as possible with her husband and their children, Leo and Luna. Cruz also continues to work as a model for the Spanish designer Loewe and has designed a bag for them in collaboration with her sister Monica.
“I need to select very well the kind of films I want to do and also dedicate my time to other artistic interests. My family is my top priority in life and that has led me to redress the balance with the passing of the years,” Cruz said.
Penelope Cruz is a happy mother, a wife in love and a successful professional. A true role model for many young Latina actresses and proof that perseverance and faith bear fruit, although there may be some bitter experiences along the way.
