Atletico Madrid has been on fire as of late, and Tuesday’s Champions League match was no different. The team led by Diego Pablo Simeone defeated FC Porto 2-1 in Do Dragao stadium in Portugal.

The team from Madrid arrived in Portugal fresh off of their win 1-0 over their nemesis Real Madrid. The red-hot form they have displayed as of late has been a bit of a surprise.

After selling their leading scorer and best player, Radamel Falcao Garcia, to AS Monaco of Ligue 1 it was thought the team would struggle. That has not been the case.

The big Brazilian striker Diego Costa has been nothing short of spectacular in front of goal this season. He currently is tied with Lionel Messi for top-scorer of Spain’s La Liga with 8 goals.

Costa, however, was not the hero against Porto.

Uruguayan defender Diego Godin came to the rescue in the 58th minute. The center-back headed the ball beyond Helton’s reach to make the match 1-1.

The Spanish side put the game out of reach in the 86th minute. Arda Turan fired the ball past Helton, but the goal did not come without controversy. Porto’s players claimed that Turan was offside.

Colombian international Jackson Martinez put Porto up 1-0 in the 16th minute. Martinez headed the ball past Courtois, but they were not able to fend off Atletico Madrid.

Other Champions League results

Chelsea defeated Steau Bucaresti 4-0 in their second Champions League appearance of the season.

The star of the night was undoubtedly Brazilian midfielder Ramires.

The Brazilian international opened the scoring in the 20th minute. He slotted home a poorly hit ball by Samuel Eto’o, and he doubled his goal output in the 55th minute.

Barcelona defeated Scottish powerhouse Celtic 1-0 with a goal by Cesc Fabregas.

AC Milan tied Ajax in Amsterdam 1-1 with goals by Mario Balotelli and Lasse Schone.

Zenit tied 0-0 at home against Austria Wien.

Champions League runner-ups, Borussia Dortmund, defeated Marseille 3-0 at home. The goals were scored by Robert Lewandowski –on two occasions– and Marco Reus.

Germany’s Schalke 04 got an important 1-0 road win over FC Basel with a goal Julian Draxler.
