It is not uncommon for women in the United States to undergo a cosmetic procedure to lift the corners of the mouth.
This smile surgery is done to counteract the natural droopiness of aging, or to help individuals born with down-turned mouths overcome a constantly unhappy appearance.
South Korean AOne Plastic Surgery Clinic is taking that process one step further, however, giving smile surgery a bit more than the “usual lift.”
The clinic, according to the Huffington Post, is creating the appearance of a perpetual smile by exaggerating the upward curve at the corner of the mouth, which has led many to call it the “Joker Lips plastic surgery.”
The procedure became international news after a photograph was posted on the social site Reddit showing a young woman with the corners of her lips curled, and a comment that read this was the ”new plastic surgery in Asia that curls the corners of your lips.”
According to a report from ABC News, while smile surgery is nothing new, the AOne website offers the procedure as a means of beautification in young women, not those who are experiencing the effects of age.
In fact, the website promotes the smile surgery, called “Smile Lipt”, by stating, “When mouth corners are lifted up, a bright and gentle image is created, and the uplifted mouth corners create a bright and jolly appearance. When corners lift up during a conversation, the person appears sincere and confident.”
However, the photos displayed in the clinic’s website do not look as radical as the one posted on Reddit, which has made some wonder about the authenticity of the latter.
According to the Huffington Post, Dr. Kwon Taek Keun has promoted the Joker Lips plastic surgery during international conventions and is quoted saying, ”Mouth corners lift up very naturally after surgery , and although mouth corners stay upturned on an impassive face, they lift up even more distinctively during a smile.”
The so called Joker Lips plastic surgery procedure has some experts concerned young women will be flocking to have their smiles adjusted due to the constant pressure to be beautiful or just to comply to the newest trend.
“In South Korean culture women are almost required to find a husband around their 30th birthdays, and they generally live with their family till they do. They are pressured by their family members to appear as beautiful as possible at all times,” Will Cain, an English language teacher who currently lives in Samcheonpo, South Korea, told CBS News. “Appearances are critical here. For example, on CVs and resumes, pictures must be included at the top. Women in particular always need to appear properly primped.”
Beyond the Joker Lips plastic surgery
South Korea has a long history of extreme beauty modification that goes beyond the Joker Lips plastic surgery.
A report from the Daily News earlier this year detailed a particularly painful procedure known as “double-jaw surgery” which was becoming popular as a beauty trend.
Unlike most cosmetic surgeries, double-jaw surgery was developed to treat an actual medical condition which occurs when the upper and lower jaw do not align. It didn’t take long, however, for South Korean surgeons to realize they could create a desired v-shaped chin and jaw line through this particular procedure.
“This surgery alters your look far more dramatically than, say, Botox or a nose job because it changes your entire facial bone structure,” Choi Jin-Young, a professor in dentistry at Seoul National University, told the Daily News at the time. “But it’s a very complex, potentially dangerous surgery … it’s disturbing to see people with no real dental flaws daring to go through it just to have a small, pretty face.”
While there were no official numbers on how many people had received the double-jaw surgery, a study into the procedure found more than half of respondents had suffered sensory issues after having it performed.
While the Joker Lips plastic surgery isn’t as involved as some of the other cosmetic procedures in South Korea, it is still considered unnecessary by modern standards. For those young women rushing to get the latest and greatest beauty treatment, what happens when a perma-smile goes out of style?
What do your think about the Joker Lips plastic surgery? Would you undergo this procedure if it became the latest trending look?
