It’s time to start planning your summer vacation, and what better way than to take some inspirations from celebrities who know how to relax? From George Clooney to Mariah to the Oprah, here’s a look at some dazzling celebrity vacation homes. Surely they’ve got an extra guestroom or two for us.
Celebrities and their vacation getaways
For Clooney, it’s Como. Notorious bachelor George Clooney keeps an upscale bachelor pad on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, long a destination of the rich and famous. Clooney’s 18th century mansion, named Villa Oleandra, is on the shores of the lake and sports views of the Swiss Alps. The villa is located in a sleepy village of only 900 people, and we bet that since Clooney moved in, half of them are paparazzi. The villa sports 15 bedrooms, apartment-sized bathrooms, swimming pool and a yacht-sized boat dock. He’s hosted all his pals from the Ocean’s 11 films, and the spot is a possible location for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s rumored nuptials, said to be happening any day now…
For the Jolie-Pitts, a castle in the South of France. Chateau Miraval is the home away from home for Angelina Jolie, partner Brad Pitt and their kids. The couple reportedly paid $80 million for the vast castle, numerous outbuildings and 1000 acres of vineyards, olive groves, orchards, gardens and forests. The chateau, which has ruins dating back to the 8th century BC, is located in the village of Brignol, near Axe en Provence in the South of France. And when they don’t feel sufficiently “away from it all” in their castle, the power couple can head further south, to their $40 million villa in Valpolicella, in northern Italy.
For Oprah, Santa Barbara is the Promised Land. When you’ve arrived, you’ve arrived, and Oprah Winfrey’s not afraid to show it. Her $50 million home in Santa Barbara is one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in the U.S. At 23,000 square feet, it features a mere six bedrooms, but 10 fireplaces and 14 bathrooms! It sits on 42 acres of formal gardens, rolling hills and wooded areas and is reportedly the largest green space in Santa Barbara. She’s dubbed the estate, which was formerly a museum, “The Promised Land,” and has engaged in a multi-million dollar renovation to give the home a more “lived-in” look. When life on the estate starts to feel ho-hum, she can always escape to her ocean-view, 60-acre estate in Maui, Hawaii.
Mariah and Nick head to a private island
When Mariah Carey, husband Nick Cannon and the kids want to get away from the hustle and bustle of New York, where they own a luxury apartment, they head to Windermere Island, Bahamas, where they own a lavish beachfront estate. The private island is connected to Eleuthera Island only by a walkway–we wonder who has to haul the diva’s luggage! Nick and Mariah’s 2008 fairy-tale wedding took place at the estate, so you’d think it must have a special place in their hearts. But the couple has their Bahamian love nest on the market; it could be yours for a mere $5.5 million.
Say Aloha to the Obamas on Oahu.
As the son of a single working mom, Barack Obama spent his childhood in Honolulu, where he lived in his grandmother’s modest home. The President may have come a long way since those formative years, but his roots still call him home, though to slightly better digs. Each year, the Obamas rent an oceanfront home on Paradise Point, at Kailua Beach, Oahu. The gated community is near a Marine Corps base, so security (and a landing strip for Air Force One) is at the ready. The lushly landscaped, ultra-lavish homes on Paradise Point typically rent for $25,000 a week, and the Obamas pay their own rent for their one- to two-week annual vacations. When not out playing golf or working out at the Marine Corp gym, the President reportedly likes to spend his time relaxing and playing on the beach with daughters Sasha and Malia, and wife Michelle.
