Executive Producer, Jennifer Lopez and her company Nuyorican Productions are putting the finishing touches on a brand new series to be launched this summer on ABC Family and not everyone is happy about it.
“The Fosters” is a one hour drama scheduled to begin airing in June that follows a multi-ethnic family headed up by two moms. Starring Teri Polo (“Meet the Parents” and “The West Wing”) as police officer Stef Foster and Sherri Saum (“In Treatment” and “Sunset Beach”) as school principal Lena Foster, the gay couple are raising a biological son along with several adoptive children when the decision to take in Callie (Maia Mitchell), a teen with a troubled past, creates chaos.
Anti-gay group rallies against ‘The Fosters’, says it’s ‘anti-family’
Anti-gay organization One Million Moms is upset about the program saying that “obviously ABC has lost their minds.” The group considers the new show “anti-family” and says that it is unacceptable content for a family show so they are asking supporters to “stop this dead in its tracks” and encouraging audiences to boycott the show.
This isn’t the first time this organization has boycotted a gay themed television show based only on a description. One Million Moms was also responsible for an all-out protest prior to the airing of NBC’s “The New Normal” starring Andrew Rannells. “The silly part is that no one has seen it,” he had said during an interview with PrideSource before the original airing of “The New Normal”. “
So what that boycott is based on is a two-line description of what they read this show was about and, just based on that alone, they’re upset. That’s disappointing because ultimately, what the show is about is how much love it takes to start a family—and not just our family.”
However, ABC is standing behind its new programming saying that it “pairs nicely” with their other pop culture hits. Michael Riley, ABC Family President, said that “The Fosters” perfectly merges with the network’s “groundbreaking storytelling and iconic characters” and will feature “the same depth, heart, close relationships and authenticity that our viewers have come to expect.”
Jennifer Lopez is joined by series creators Bradley Bredeweg (“Fly Girls”) and Peter Paige (“Queer As Folk”), who will also serve as writers and executive producers. “The Fosters” series premiere airs on Monday, June 3 at 9/8c.
