As the use of social media becomes more of an everyday activity and less of a novelty, teachers and parents are not only harnessing the potential learning benefits of the medium, but are wondering just what students should be taught when it comes to mass, online social interactions.

For many adults, social networking is a key to career success, but for children and young adults, social media is more about connecting with friends. The more technology advances, the younger the age of the average social media user becomes.

“I think we have to seriously look at the age of the average user today and see the trend that has occurred over the last ten years,” Justin Parks, a social media, SEO and marketing specialist told VOXXI. “Online users are getting younger as technology becomes more accessible. While certain restrictions are in place (say for example the minimum age of 13 years old that Facebook requires before you can open an account – not that this stopped anyone!) platforms such as Twitter have no such restrictions.

“Anyone of any age can be on there,” he added. “Before even teachers become a part of the education process, parents need to be involved in their children’s education via social media and this of course requires parents to understand it in the first instance.”

Maria Paula Velez, a marketing specialist and mom of two teens, believes social media in the classroom is a must nowadays.

“You can even start entire businesses through social media connections, and teaching this to children earlier on will prepare them for the challenges of a world where social media is part of almost every interaction—from business to personal,” she told VOXXI.

So, in order to be most effective, if social media etiquette was part of a school’s curriculum, what should it focus on?
