Russell Brand is looking to add a new achievement to his list, that of yoga instructor. The 37-year-old actor/comedian is currently taking a course in instruction according to BuzzFeed, and should have the initial process completed by Spring of 2013. After that, Brand plans on opening his own yoga studio in Los Angeles where, he says, drug addicts and the homeless might have a way of finding their “spiritual soul.”
“Russ has always wanted to set up his own yoga studio and has decided to make it his new project. His teacher at Goldenbridge Yoga is in charge of teacher training at the center and has encouraged Russ to take the course,” a source told Mirror. “He decided to give it a go. The pair have become good friends and Russell relies on Tej to bring calmness into his often crazy life.”
Why would Russell Brand become so enthused with yoga?
Well, apparently the movie star knows about the many health benefits of yoga practice.
Yoga is indeed an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety. Yoga teaches the practice of breathing, meditation and posing, and is considered a form of alternative medicine.
Other benefits of yoga include:
- Stress reduction achieved through balance and concentration
- Increased fitness achieved through different poses encouraging range of motion and flexibility
- Reduction of heart rate and blood pressure
- Assistance in chronic disease management
- Weight loss
Benefits aside, experts caution yoga may not be for everyone, and it should be avoided by individuals with issues of balance, uncontrolled high blood pressure, artificial joints, severe osteoarthritis, glaucoma and other eye conditions, and pregnancy.
As for Mr. Russell Brand, the Mirror source states, “He wants to create his own mantra and take his teachings round the world like other renowned teachers he’s learned from in the past.”
It’s been reported that Russell Brand will do all his training in Los Angeles and “will start with the KRI Kundalini training level 1 and will take his level 2 course later on next year,” said the source. ”It’s all part of his dream of building his own community and he would like to offer free classes to those in need. It would also include meditations, cooking classes, lectures and aromatherapy classes.”
