Olympic bronze medalist, Danell Leyva, is not just known for his talents in the gym but also his blue gray star towel he carries around.
Leyva’s towel has gotten as much publicity as the Olympic gymnast. Leyva’s towel even has a Twitter account.
According to Kelly Whiteside from USAtoday.com, “With 10,000-plus followers on Twitter, @leyvastowel is soaking up the spotlight. “It’s crazy,” said Leyva, who isn’t sure who started the account. “It’s kinda cool.”
Leyva’s lucky towel has made its presence known the world through the Olympics. Whiteside reported, “Between events, Leyva drapes his lucky towel over his head to block out distractions good and bad. Other times, it sits regally on his shoulders, its stars cascading down his chest.”
After winning his bronze medal, Leyva made it known that he plans to compete in at least two more Olympics as well as his up and downs during the team finals and individual failures.
As to where his lucky towel came from; it is quite a coincidence.
“One aunt went to go buy a towel, and the other one went to her house to get a towel for me because I wanted something to wipe my sweat off,” he explained. “And they both came back with the exact same towel. I said, ‘OK, this is a coincidence. I’m going to keep these two as my lucky towels.’”
“One of them ripped a couple of months later, so I just had the one. I’ve had it since 2007. It hasn’t left my side since.”
“Except for the occasional spin in the washer.”
The only place Leyva refuses to take his lucky towel is the laundry during the Olympics. Leyva fears the worst for his towel and is just being cautious.
“Leyva is not taking any chances.”
“No, no,” he said. “I’ll just air it out.”
