Enrique Peña Nieto of the PRI will become President of Mexico in December.
At his side there will be an impeccable first lady, his current wife, actress Angélica Rivera, “La Gaviota” as Mexicans affectionately call her, after her character in a soap opera.
Enrique Peña is a very handsome man, a true seducer who has been able to conquer his electorate; who has fans rendered at his feet and that, in addition to his political life, has a love life worthy of a Mexican soap opera.
Mónica Pretelini, the deceased wife
They met in 1993 when she was 30 years old and he was a gallant 27. They married in 1994 and had three children: Paulina, Alejandro and Nicole. Monica Pretellini was ever present in the political career of her husband; she supported him publicly, and even created a fan club when Peña was fighting for election as Governor of the State of Mexico in 2005.
Of course, this irreproachable public image was very different from the reality of their home. Peña was constantly unfaithful to Monica, he had two children out of wedlock. She seemed to know it, but political conveniences meant they never spoke of divorce.
Monica Pretellini died in 2007, and immediately there was speculation that she, no longer able to tolerate the infidelities of Peña, committed suicide. Other rumors suggested that Enrique Peña was not innocent in the death of his wife, and he was even accused of having murdered her. This was never proven.
Maritza Díaz, the mother of his fourth child
This beautiful brunette was working for the government when she met Peña, who was married to Pretellini. They began a romance that was fairly stable, and together had a child who is three years younger than Peña’s youngest daughter with Pretellini. The President-elect recognizes the child as his son. And although he is responsible for the child economically, Peña does not have a fluid relationship with the boy.
Peña’s relationship with Díaz ended when he arrived at the position of State Governor. That position did not allow the risk of his extramarital relationship being public, so rather than divorce Pretellini, he abandoned Díaz and his child with her.
Yessica de la Madrid, the mother of his last son
In 2005 de la Madrid and Peña met during his campaign for state governor. Yes, this was the same time Peña was cheating on his wife with a lover whom he abandoned, along with his son … are you keeping up with the story?
This time, it seems, he was less concerned with political scandal, and he continued his affair with de la Madrid after he was elected governor. With her he also had a son who, unfortunately, died of cancer when he was still a baby and within a few weeks of the death of Monica Pretellini. Again Peña’s political image weighed more than his feelings for his lover, and he soon left de la Madrid.
Rebecca Solano, the first known post widow fiancé
The relationship between TV host Solano and Peña became public a few months after he widowed. They had met in 2007 and initially kept their relationship private, although Peña often had Solano participate in political meetings, trips and social events. Again Peña’s passion for women made him unfaithful to Solano, and the relationship ended.
Angélica Rivera, “La Gaviota”
If there is a happy ending for this soap opera, it may be the romance between Peña and the famous actress Angélica Rivera. They met on an advertising campaign and began to date in mid-2008, but it wasn’t until 2009 Peña announced the relationship. They finally married in November 2010, in the Cathedral of Toluca.

There are two curiosities that cannot go overlooked in this regard: in this Cathedral lay the remains of his deceased wife, Monica Pretelini. Also, as a widower, Enrique Peña had no problem marrying in the Catholic Church. But Rivera had been married to a producer with whom she has three daughters… still they got the Vatican to annul her marriage.
The president-elect of Mexico will be accompanied by his fairy-tale first lady in December when he takes office. It is expected that Peña will contain his passion for women while in office, but we wonder if this notorious womanizer really can turn over a new leaf.
