Fact

Grandmother and step-mother kill Savannah Hardin, a 9 year old girl.

How

Punishing her for lying about having eaten candy. They made her run for three hours non-stop. The step mom called the police after the girl collapsed.

The little girl died on Monday at the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, from dehydration and low sodium, a condition common in marathon runners, Reuters cited.

Jessica Mae Hardin and the grandmother, Joyce Hardin Garrard, 46, were charged Wednesday with felony murder and were being held in the Etowah County Detention Center until they could raise $500,000 bail each.

The girl’s father, who had custody, wasn´t present when the tragedy occurred. There were no prior accounts of abuse.

“A very unnecessary act,” Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp told CNN in a telephone interview.

The most important role in life

I don’t have children, but this doesn’t make me less sensitive about issues where kids are involved. It was my choice not to have children. I didn’t think I had what it took to be a good mother. It takes more than love, patience and good genes. It takes a lot of understanding and learning. It´s a full time job and probably one of the most important ones you will ever have in your life.

Tests for becoming parents

We need to pass tests for driving, finishing school, owning a gun, graduating from school or college, but then there is something as important as this, and we hope nature will take care of it.

Nature is naïve

Nature believes we are naturally nurturing and want the best for our kids, and will be ready for a child when the time comes. No, this doesn’t always happen.

Qualifying to be a parent

There should be a psychological test, at least, and have to give reasons as to why you think you qualify to be a parent. This might sound harsh, but on the news we see daily kids being punished, exploited, abused physically and psychologically. And this is proof that unfortunately the ability to procreate doesn’t mean you qualify to be a parent.

Dangerous humans

Nature doesn’t know that human beings are broken, that they are not as other animals who have their babies and nurture them. Many human beings are a danger to themselves and others of their kind.

One single act

As I read this piece of news, I immediately pictured my niece who is a year older, 10. I felt pain and anger. Anger at those grown-ups who were supposed to be caring for a child and did something so ruthless. Although they said there were no reports of prior abuse, this single act killed her. Some call punishment what should be called abuse.

Types of abuse

Abuse doesn’t have to be physical. Psychological abuse can be as damaging. The psychological scars run deep.

Physical abuse

Is self-explanatory

Child neglect

  • Not providing necessary clothing (when it’s possible to do so)
  • Not providing nourishment
  • Inadequate hygiene
  • Not expressing love.
  • Limiting physical contact

Pshychological abuse

  • Insulting
  • Belittling
  • Shaming
  • Bullying
  • Rejecting.
  • Constant yelling
  • Exposing the kid to violence

Discipline vs abuse

Discipline is setting boundaries and finding constructive techniques conducive to helping a child to grow and learn in a positive way. To me the distinction is very clear.
